Background of the Study
Communal clashes in Biase have led to significant trauma among affected populations, resulting in complex psychological challenges that require urgent attention. Victims of these conflicts often experience severe emotional distress, post-traumatic stress, and social dislocation (Ifeoma, 2023). Coping mechanisms, both adaptive and maladaptive, play a crucial role in determining long-term recovery outcomes. While some individuals resort to traditional and community-based support systems, others may develop unhealthy coping strategies that exacerbate their trauma (Chinwe, 2024). Recent studies have highlighted the importance of understanding these coping mechanisms to design effective mental health interventions that cater specifically to conflict-affected communities (Obi, 2025). This study critically examines the various coping strategies employed by victims of communal clashes, aiming to identify effective methods that can be integrated into broader mental health support frameworks. The findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners working to restore psychological stability in conflict zones.
Statement of the Problem
Communal clashes in Biase have left a trail of psychological trauma among affected individuals. Many victims struggle with severe emotional distress and post-traumatic stress due to the sudden violence and ensuing social disruption. Inadequate mental health support exacerbates the situation, leading to maladaptive coping mechanisms. The lack of systematic evaluation of these coping strategies hinders the development of effective interventions. This study seeks to investigate the trauma experienced by clash victims and to identify coping mechanisms that either aid or impair recovery, with the goal of informing targeted mental health support initiatives (Ifeoma, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the psychological trauma resulting from communal clashes.
To identify adaptive and maladaptive coping mechanisms among victims.
To propose effective interventions for trauma recovery.
Research Questions:
What are the primary forms of trauma experienced by communal clash victims in Biase?
Which coping mechanisms are most prevalent among the affected population?
How can interventions be designed to enhance adaptive coping?
Research Hypotheses:
Communal clashes significantly increase the incidence of trauma-related disorders.
Adaptive coping mechanisms correlate with better recovery outcomes.
Targeted interventions can improve overall mental health recovery.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive analysis of trauma and coping mechanisms among victims of communal clashes. The insights will support the development of tailored mental health interventions and inform policy reforms, ultimately contributing to improved recovery outcomes in conflict-affected areas of Biase (Chinwe, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to investigating trauma and coping mechanisms among victims of communal clashes in Biase Local Government Area, focusing solely on psychological outcomes and intervention strategies.
Definitions of Terms:
Trauma: Emotional and psychological injury resulting from a distressing event.
Coping Mechanisms: Strategies used to manage stress and adversity.
Communal Clashes: Violent conflicts occurring between community groups.
